Michigan Critters

I thought I'd mix it up a little bit and share some of the critters that I saw while in Michigan.  I am so disappointed that I did not get a photo of the groundhog at the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park.

I did get a photo there of this guy.

I photographed this Bird Seed Robber in my cousin's backyard.
It is an Eastern Chipmunk (Tamias striatus) and with the white stripe, looks different than the ones I see in Oregon.

This fawn was in a yard in Grand Haven, MI.  No sign of Mama Doe, I hope she was nearby.

This snake was in lawns in Windmill Island Gardens.

As was this bunny.

The doe was grazing along the Empire Bluffs Trail in Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore.

We observed several of these creatures dashing around in the grass of Colonial Michilimackinac.

I thought they were chipmunks...

Turns out they are Thirteen Lined Ground Squirrels (Spermophilus tridecemlineatus).
You can see how they got their name.

A fairly large insect at Mackinaw City, MI.

This butterfly was working away in the flowerbed at McGulpin Point Lighthouse. My cousin had SO many different kinds of butterflies in her backyard. Why I have no photos I cannot explain.

Someone is eating my cousin's cucumbers.
Could this be the culprit?

I have to say one of the things my sister and I most enjoyed was sitting out in the evening and watching the fireflies come to life.  I've never had the opportunity to observe them before, and I know that for many folks they are iconic reminders of long, hot childhood summers.

It's interesting to see and hear the difference between the wildlife in one part of the country over another. You don't have fireflies out in Oregon? I love when they come out around here. I don't remember them from my childhood. Enjoyed your pictures!

I also had no idea you did not get to see fireflies! Funny what we take for granted! That squirrel is certainly very very different... besides the stripes, didn't seem to have much of a tail like our Grey ones here. I guess the scant few chipmunks I have seen out here were Eastern... they don't stop to pose for pictures! Thanks for sharing! Hugs!
