And I had to feel sorry for this little Junco doing its best to raise/feed a big old Cowbird baby.

Not a cuckoo in the nest, but a cowbird in the nest.

Showcasing Smaller Birds

More progress! Now am working on the lily of the valley leaves.

What's up with the little birds?  Glad you asked.

Thrilled, thrilled, thrilled to have a group of 12 or more Bushtits gather at the front feeders. 

When they mate up to nest, the group disbands and for several weeks I do not see them.  But now they've raised their families and they are once again flocking together.

Such tiny little things.

With a long, waggy tail.

And I got another Bewick's Wren sighting. 

The bird is puffed and fluffed as it was grooming.

I heard its buzzy call and then was able to locate it.

I also heard and then saw a female Bullock's Oriole.

That pleased me immensely and I am not even bothered that I did not have my camera with me.  Perhaps I'll get to see it again. 

 

Feather Families

A bit of stitching progress - currently working on the final shamrock. 

This time of year, I see lots of feathered families at the feeders. 

This is a young Red-shafted Norther Flicker. 

Parent on the left - kid on the right. 

Very excited to see four, yes four Acorn Woodpeckers!

Only managed a photo of three of them - two guys ad a gal.

Male on the left, female on the right.

This may be the newest family member.

Note the blue eyes indicative on a young bird - this is a female.

That would make for two males and two females.

 

Another Start

 This might be more fitting for March stitching, but anyway I thought I'd work on the 2nd Danybrod pattern included in this download.

As of Wednesday I still had three active Violet-green Swallow nesting boxes.

But I'm not sure what is up with this 4th one.

Two pairs of swallows seemed to be house-hunting.

There is plenty of time for a second brood if that's the case.

The Black-capped Chickadees have fledged and I am awash in these small birds - as many as 8 at time.

A finish!  A finish!

On the birding front...

The American Goldfinches are still gathering nesting material.

Time to get busy!

And I got a brief look at another small yellow bird.

My first of season Orange-crowned Warbler. 

Normally there's not much of an orange crown to see, so I got lucky!

Pleased to share this summer visitor and I hope that other warblers wend their way over to the backyard.

Just one more violet leaf and I'm done!

There are several Hairy Woodpecker youngsters.

If you look closely there are three birds.

One on the left side of the left post, one atop the third post, and the last bird eating suet on the right.

Here's one of the young birds with a bit of red atop its head. 

This is another young birds - LOTS of red on its head!

Time to eat!

Each summer the adult woodpeckers appear to take the young ones on a Suet Tour - to show them easy access to a hardy meal.

A New Start!

You might be forgiven for thinking that I'd never take up cross stitch again and work on something new.  Well, I have and here it is.  This is called "Muguet and Violettes" by Danybrod.
