Deer

Yet another very cold, very hard frost this morning.

It's a good thing the deer have switcher over to their winter coast.

She does not look very happy.

I had a group of five - they are now the same color as the bracken fern.

Looking alert.

I had a wonderful meal with family yesterday and hope that you too had a special day.  I'm off to work today, but first here are a few of the birds that came by during our brief snow on Wednesday.

Downy Woodpecker

Junco

Lesser Goldfinch

California Quail

The quail were quite active...

...and managed to successful dodge a Cooper's Hawk fly-by while I watched.

They tend to stay close to shelter for that very reason.

A Skiff of Snow

I woke up this morning to snow gently falling.

It's only supposed to last until 10am - so I don't think that we will get much more than an inch or so.

I do enjoy watching it fall...

...and coating the trees.

I got the bird feeders ready yesterday.

So now I can just sit back.

Tonight and the next 2 night are to be in the mid-20s.

It's nice to be inside and warm!

We often have pumpkin, apple, and blackberry pie for Thanksgiving.  What are your favorites?

Continuing on with woodpeckers - here's a female Hairy.

She was working on the feeders in the front of the house.

She paid me no mind.

At the back of the huse, a male Flicker came by for  short visit.

Most of our leaves have now fallen - how about you?

Here's one of my little Downy Woodpeckers.

And I was pleased to have a Red-breasted Sapsucker come by.

The bird was very composed and let me come close to stand right under the tree he was working on.

Love that bright red head.

It worked away for 20 minutes or more.

Just Deer

We had three deer in the backyard.

It was barely light...

...and very frosty.

This doe had a plan...

...try to eat from the feeder.

Another munched the icy covered grass.

Then it was time to move out.

As I mentioned I'm using a different camera so the photos are more distance and will be so for a couple of weeks.

Flicker in a frosty tree.

Lots of Lesser Goldfinches out and about.

They provide a pop of color on a winters morning.

Sunny, but cold.

The border of this stitch reminds me of Indian corn.

We're in for a few cold nights, so the hummers will be wanting nectar first thing in the morning.

I will take in some of the feeders that are distant from the house and put them back out by 7am when it gets light.

I wanted to take more photos, but I have an issue with my camera.  The lens will no longer retract and so I am going to send it in for repair.

I have another 'pocket' camera, the zoom capabilities are modest, so the quality of my photos will change for a while.  Please be patient.
