January trail camera captured a raven!

Wow!

I hear them and see them flying, but have never seen them land.

So this was pretty cool.

Come back again soon!

Around Halloween, our trail camera pick up on a new to us critter!

Wow!

We had a T-Rex amble through!

Just a single dino, not a family unit.

Still! Wow!

That's a first for us!

The Jays...

A California Scrub Jay

A Steller's Jay drinking from an icy fountain.

Most birds have to tip back their heads to swallow the water they drink.

What a complicated feather pattern.
And blue feather are weird as most are not really blue, it is the light reflecting on the feathers that makes them appear blue.

Now for a little guy.
Male Lesser Goldfinch.

And a tree full of Pine Siskins.

Feeling as Gray as the Day

I am feeling as gray as the day.

The Juncos echo that with their muted colors.

I am glad to see them again for the winter months.

They are tidy little birds.

The Stellar's Jay...

They are bright.

They are characters!

Doesn't that make you smile - even if somewhat reluctantly?

I've not had time to bird much lately, so this will be short.

Short but sweet.

An extremely handsome male Flicker.

I continue to have hawks hanging around.

More often than not it is a little Sharp-shinned Hawk.

It likes the deer fence and also perches on the highest roof ledge for a good view.

I've not blogged much about the California Quail this winter.

That's in part because I see far, far, far fewer birds than I've had in past winters.

The usual flock size is anywhere from 30-50 birds.

This year I'm seeing 4-6 birds intermittently.

This is a group of 5.

Overwhelmingly males.

Four to one. Only one male is going to be happy come spring.

Too dark - but can you see that bright eye looking at us?

Jays are always watching.
