Red Santa Red Bird

Design - Santa Folk - Animal Santas - Rabbit
Designer - Sue McElhaney
Magazine - For the Love of Cross Stitch - November 1988
Fabric - 14 count White Aida
Date Stitched - unknown

Remember back in the 1980's when everything you cross stitched required copious amounts of back-stitch?  I must say the back-stitching does make this Santa Bunny 'pop'.

And the bright red head of this sapsucker makes this bird 'pop' too.

If you click on the photo to enlarge it, you can see the new orange colored sap wells the bird has been busily drilling.

He is at work on this tree most mornings when I bring down the big bird feeder.

Another pop of color - a Steller's Jay!

Bright Birds

Design - "On the First Day of Christmas"
Designer - Sisters and Best Friends
Magazine - "Just Cross Stitch" 2005 Christmas Ornament Issue
Fabric - 28 count R & R Cafe Kona linen
Started - 26 November 2009
Completed - 28 November 2009

Gosh - ten years have passed since I stitched this partridge!

Let's look at some more recent birds.

The Red-Breasted Sapsucker is making a large set of new sap wells on a big second-growth Douglas fir tree.  This project has lasted for more than a week.  The bird spends anywhere from 20 minutes to several hours working each day.

This Anna's female is still the Guardian of the Backyard Feeders!

She takes her duties seriously.

No big surprise to have a little female Downy Woodpecker at a suet feeder.

Here she is again.

More surprising to have the male Downy eating on a sunflower chip feeder.

He had quite a prolonged meal.

And after several days of no-shows, I had two Red-breasted Nuthatches eating peanuts.  A good day for birds.

Sunday's Hummingbirds

It's a nasty, cold morning - very close to freezing rain.

I am always amazed that the little hummingbirds can withstand this kind of weather.

I think we under-estimate how tough they are.

This female has taking to guarding one of the feeders.

She perches on the top of a lawn chair situated beneath the feeder.

No one comes close without her approval.

The birds also like to perch on this fence.

Sometimes they will share!

IT's usually two females that call a detente.

She looks grumpy...

...then curious...

...then resolute.

Yet another very cold, very hard frost this morning.

It's a good thing the deer have switcher over to their winter coast.

She does not look very happy.

I had a group of five - they are now the same color as the bracken fern.

Looking alert.

The Day After

Chart - "Turkey Time"
Design - "Turkey Time"
Designer - Lizzie Kate
Fabric - 32 count Tumbleweed linen
Fibers - GAST - 2 strands over 2 orders
Started - 20 November 2017
Completed - 24 November 2017

I had a wonderful meal with family yesterday and hope that you too had a special day.  I'm off to work today, but first here are a few of the birds that came by during our brief snow on Wednesday.

Downy Woodpecker

Lesser Goldfinch

California Quail

The quail were quite active...

...and managed to successful dodge a Cooper's Hawk fly-by while I watched.

They tend to stay close to shelter for that very reason.
