Let's celebrate the first day of spring with a spring stitch...
...and a spring bunny.
More and more hummingbirds as the weather improves.
I've now seen two male Rufous Hummingbirds - buzzing one another over territorial issues. So let's have a crash course on IDing the female Rufous Hummingbirds.
The tricky part is that they look very similar to Anna's females.
This is an Anna's female - note the green and white breast. That's the crucial difference.
Here's my Rufous Hummingbird female. While she has a green back and head like an Anna's...
She has brown (or rufous) feathers on the sides of her breast.
While it is hard to ID the bird if it is in flight, the differences are readily apparent when the bird is at rest.

She's a bit smaller than an Anna's, but that is hard to tell.
As I type this there is a male Rufous Hummingbird peering at me through my second story window. Perhaps he wants to weigh in on this topic.

Absolutely love your hummingbird lesson...pictures were fabulous wish we were lucky enough here in northern MN to get the Rufous..
