I am trying to hone my ID skills a bit before the Great Backyard Bird Count this weekend.

Sparrows can be tricky.  I have around a dozen Golden-crowned Sparrows.

And at first glance, this might look like another one.
Instead it is a White-throated Sparrow.

It's coloring is a bit different - more brown and white, with dark brown bands on the top of its head.

The Chickadees are easier to tell apart.

Here's a Black-capped Chickadee.

And here's the smaller Chestnut-backed Chickadee.

Lots of chocolate brown feathers make it easy to ID.

Juncos coloring tells whether it is a male or female.

Female Oregon Junco.

And the darker colored male Oregon Junco.

Love this snowman, Beth--and the cardinal on his stovetop hat is wonderful. I'm amazed at how many species of birds you already know!

That snowman is adorable... perfect for my weather...we got 2" this morning... your bird pictures are wonderful and you have better vision than I to spot all those tiny differences. Have fun with the bird count!

Love to see the birds, especially those different from my usual suspects..These annual counts are very important.

I was just looking at a similar snowman chart of hers! I doubt I will get out and about for birding this week, as we have a lot of errands and appointments to do, so no chances of seeing any 'new' birds... But I get a lot around here! I also ID'd your birds correctly! I am learning YOUR birds! Ha!

That snowman is very cute! I love the subtle colors of the female junco! Until we moved out here we only had one type of chicadee, the black capped.

Love the bird shots & descriptions as well as the stitching. I live in Oregon City & have many of the same birds and always have trouble with the sparrows & telling them apart.

Great finish on Snowbird! I will be participating in the GBBC, but I don't have many birds visiting my yard this winter.
