Berries and Acorms

I've now got three berries stitched on "Sweet Berries" and have added a blackbird/crow as well.

It's Wednesday, the weather is lovely...
Let's take a Walk!

Oh...right, you can't be bothered to get off my Vera Bradley bag...

Truly it is a lovely day...and this time of year is when my plant identification ignorance grows profoundly large! I have every reason to believe that in Spring / Summer I knew the name of this shrub/tree.  But now the blossoms are gone...it does have lovely black berries...and I have no idea what it is.
I'm giving serious consideration to putting out some plant tags next spring so that in the Fall / Winter I'll have the info I so need.

This I do know!  A nice group of acorns on one of our Oregon White Oaks.  Last year we had next to no acorns, so I'm glad to see that this year the squirrels and critters will have something to eat.

And aren't the rose hips pretty?  This Nootka Rose rambles along the fence of my sister's Dahlia Garden.

I keep photographing the Ash trees.  They are no longer brilliant green.  They've now turned color and the dry leaves shimmer delicately.

Blackberries Galore!
These belong to the Trailing Blackberry or Pacific Blackberry (Rubus ursinus).

And this is a cluster of Himalayan Blackberries (Rubus discolor).

One of our young Douglas Fir has set cones for the first time!

It has quite a good crop.  The cones on the left and right are immature, the center cone has 'puffed out' and thus is more mature.  These downward hanging cones are the reason why a Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) is not a true fir - fir cones grow upright! Pseudotsuga means "False Hemlock".

And I end the walk with another of my formerly identified, now seasonally unknown shrubs!  The leaves are beginning to turn, and it has a few small green berries.  I'll do better next year!

Acorns and rose hips, two of my favourite things. I used to be given rose hip syrup as a young girl and it's a lovely memory.
