I finally feel as though there are lots of hummingbirds out and about.
The poor Anna's are horribly out-numbered at the present.
AS best I can tell I have one male and a couple of females.
I think there are at least seven Rufous Hummingbirds.
They are most active morning and evening - eating and battling one another.
This is verbena bonariensis. It has teeny tiny purple blossoms...
...and the hummers love it.
I think this is a young male - see the bit of glinting copper color on the throat?
Female Rufous.
Female Anna's.
Back to female Rufous.
But the best news is that last week I misspoke...
My male Rufous Hummingbird is still here!
Hooray hooraw!
Instead of guarding from on high...
..he now sits on the fence protecting 'his' Mudroom Flowerbed.
No incursions go undefended.
He even looks like he is wearing a coat of glinting armor!
So glad he is still brightening my summer.
