Feeding Fledglings

Many of the birds have fledged.

I was delighted to see a male Hairy Woodpecker feeding a fledgling.
The male has his back to us, the fledgling has the light red on top of the head.
I learned that ALL fledgling Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers have red atop their heads - a signal for parents to feed them - so you cannot tell males from females until they mature a bit and the red moves to the back of the head or disappears.

Both eating.

Dad up high, kid down low.

Dad

Feeding time.

Waiting.

Eating.

Such fun to watch.

I love seeing what good care the parent birds take of their babies including those almost ready to leave the nest for good.
