A Sharp-shinned Hawk flew in for a bit.

All the Flickers left, but the Steller's Jays and a Gray Squirrel seemed unbothered and continued to eat seed and suet.

The bird did not stay long before flying off.

Sunday's Hummer

Unlike much of the United States , in western Oregon we have Anna's Hummingbirds all year long. They do not migrate.

This time all the photos are of the resident male Anna's.

And Then There Was One...Antler

It's Barry the Buck Time.

What's up you might ask?

What's the big deal?

Remember when Barry looked like this?
That's how he looked Tuesday morning.

But by Tuesday afternoon...

The right antler is GONE!

Just the left antler remains.

As he hung out in the backyard all day, I'm going to stroll around and see if I can find the antler.

A Couple of Nice Birds

A couple of nice birds

Female Anna's

Red-breasted Sapsucker
I like the contrast of the snowy young tree and the bark of the second growth Douglas fir.

I think the sap would not be running much in cold weather.

Varied Thrush Encore

Design - "Barney"
Chart Name - "June" (#325)
Designer - The Cricket Collection
Fabric - 30 count Lucky Penny R & R linen
Fibers - DMC - 2 strands over 2 threads
Started - 4 October 2014
Completed - 5 October 2014

When the weather improved, the Varied Thrush disappeared from the yard back to the Douglas fir forests and the inviting leaf litter beneath the oak trees.

But I did take LOTS of photos while the bird was at hand.

Based on the coloring, this is a female.

Their head and back are brown, whereas males are a truer black in color.

Nonetheless a nice looking birds.

Lots of our WBU customers rural and residential had Varied Thrush show up during the stormy cold weather.

Like Robins, they are generally berry eaters and insectivores.

I tossed out small bits of apple, and I also think it ate some suet bits.

A good look at the brown head and back.

But if hungry enough, the birds will eat seeds.

I enjoyed the visit, short though it was.
