I saw some ducks!

A group of five flew overhead.

This epitomizes winter.

Got your mittens on?

There's a blue, blue sky.

But it is cold out!

We've had a hard frost for several mornings in a row...

With low temperatures around 24f.

Everything in covered in frost.

And the birds are puffed up.

Do you see anything usual about this bird?

Answer: It's missing most of its tail feathers. That might be indicative of a close encounter with a hawk or other predator. It can fly just fine and the feathers will regrow.

Well maybe there will be some Pine Siskins this winter.

I had a large group about a week ago, but now when I look at the feeders I often see  Siskin.

There are those bright yellow wing bars.

They have a small sharp beak.

And they often show up with mixed flocks which can include Juncos and Golden-crown Sparrows like this group.

I'm late with the post.

But I think she is worth the wait.

I think there are a couple of female Anna's

It's been well below freezing the past few nights.

It is remarkable that they've adapted to weather like this.

There's a Cobane Christmas ornament that looks just like this bird!

A Douglas Squirrel - a native to this area.

Douglas squirrels live in coniferous forest habitats along the Pacific Coast, from the Sierra Nevada (mountains) of California, northwards to the southwestern coast of British Columbia. *

Mating can occur as early as February. Gestation is about four weeks, and the young (which are altricial) are weaned at about eight weeks of age. There may be up to six kits in a litter, though four is more usual. In the southern and lower parts of their range, they produce two litters each year. *

Douglas squirrels are territorial; in winter, each squirrel occupies a territory of about 10 000 square metres, but during the breeding season a mated pair will defend a single territory together. Douglas squirrels are active by day, throughout the year, often chattering noisily at intruders. On summer nights, they sleep in ball-shaped nests that they make in the trees, but in the winter they use holes in trees as nests. Groups of squirrels seen together during the summer are likely to be juveniles from a single litter.*

Quiet Day

It's a quiet day.

It part because of this bird.

It's a small Sharp-shinned Hawk.

The jays hung around, but the rest of the birds (smaller in size) said, "Good-bye!"

I know most of us are celebrating a bit differently this year with smaller and more intimate gatherings. But after dinner you can still go outside and take a walk...

...or better still, take a nap if you are so inclined!
