Splashes of Red

I am hard at work stitching away on a reindeer from The Prairie Schooler's "Evergreen" chart.  Right now it looks as though the chart should have been called "Ever Red"!

Splashes of red show up when I watch my woodpeckers.

The male Hairy Woodpecker has a heart-shaped spot on the back of his head.

The female does not.

She's just black and white.

The young male Flickers have just a tinge of red on their head.

The females do not/

The 'correct' name for these birds is Red-shafted Northern Flicker.  But I get tired of typing all that, so I just refer to them as Flickers.

And anyway, I think they are Orange-shafted - not Red-Shafted.  Don't you agree?

Ah oh - she's sticking her tongue out at us!

Sill bird!

Both male and female Acorn Woodpeckers have a patch of red.  The male is on the left, the female on the right.

Here's another shot of a female.

Here's a male puffed up on a frosty morning.

At least down is a great insulator.

And peanuts have lots of ready energy.

I love your bird photos! And the reindeer looks very handsome. I only recently discovered Prairie Schooler (just in time for them to be going out of business, woops) and love their patterns.

With all our cold and nasty weather up here, we are getting lots of woodpeckers at the feeder, just not an acorn type.

Going to be interesting to see the red reindeer revealed. Your stitching is lovely. I have hairy and downy woodpeckers here and I sometimes glimpse the pileated which always thrills me. Love how you are caring for your birds. I have just switched to sunflower seeds which all my birds seem to prefer.

I am sure you have finished the red reindeer... I am just behind in reading...so what's new?? I try to read a few every day. The Hairy Woodpecker must be part Flicker to have that red heart shape! Someone around here shot a picture of two Flickers, one was an Orange-shafted and the other was Yellow! Would love to see one closer up than I did this fall... Maybe next year! Hugs!
