Bird Watching

We're brushing up on our bird watching skills so that we'll be in top shape when the Great Backyard Bird Count comes around in mid-February.

Even though I have a new suet feeder with a tail rest, the Flickers seem to prefer my old feeder atop a plastic dish.

I was able to get a couple of 'action' shots.
I'd not realized just how orange the under feathers on the wings were.

In this pose she looks very unassuming.

Her bright colors are not apparent until she takes flight.

She is a pretty bird.

You could use my new feeder you know!

The Song Sparrow has it figured out!

You are right, I always thought flickers were rather dull, apart from the spots. Your in fight photos show remarkable color under wings. I have a couple of woodpeckers at my suet feeders, until the starlings come in flocks to scare them away. Oh well, they all must feed.

My favourite flickers Beth. They have such lovely feather markings - great photos too.

Your flicker's colors are beautiful. Isn't it funny how we put out feeders for certain birds, but they still prefer the old ones. You can't even find my feeders right now. We've had over 8 inches of snow today and it's still coming down!

That is so funny Beth. We finally had a flicker at the feeder today and I noticed the same beautiful color when it flew away!
