The cats SO hate this cold snowy weather!
The air is very dry and Padma is nothing but a long-hair electrostatic conductor! Look at the hairs on his tail they are every-which-way. We can't pet him as we get shocked and he gets shocked.
Solomon tried to go outside in the snow.
It did not work that well as as his belly is now shaved (he had an ultrasound) and he got very cold. Here are the divots he made leaping in the deep snow.
Here's what the Outdoor World looks like.
Thursday we had a high of 31F and a low of 15F.
Friday it snowed and we had a high of 27F and a low of 23F.
Saturday was even colder. I got worried about my greenhouse and my Mom and sister helped me move all the plants inside the shop. That turned out to be the right thing to do as Saturday we had a high of 23F and a low of -7F. Sunday's high was 21F and the low 8F.
This so SO cold!
The last time we had weather like this was clear back in 1972.
Thank goodness we are warming up.
So Sunday I decided to look for birds. It was so cold that the feeders were very quiet.
I did see a couple of hawks first thing.
I found a Mourning Dove all puffed up.
A frosty Steller's Jay
The Starlings pigged-out at the suet feeder.
A male Quail stood guard in the blackberry thicket.
The Acorn Woodpeckers worked on their granary tree and ate peanuts at my feeders.
Lots of the small birds, like this Song Sparrow, found a bit of warm sunshine while seeking shelter in the trees.
While out on a Winter Walk, my sister spied this Pileated Woodpecker at work.
Look who else has found a bit of sunshine amid the snow and ice!

I sure never thought I'd have the opprotunity to take photos of hummingbirds in the snow.

Those hummers in the snow are just so strange! Obviously they are tough!
Henry doesn't like snow. We have discovered that now. It snowed 8 inches yesterday and Mabel begged and begged him to play in it. Nope! Potty and straight back into the house for him. ;)
Hope you warm up to a reasonable temp soon! Beautiful pictures of hummingbirds in the snow; that is a treasure for sure.
It's quite a contradiction to see a hummingbird on a snowy branch. Your comments about the static made me smile.
To help with Padma's static problems, rub him down with a dryer sheet. I had to do that with my long haired cat when we lived in an apartment. If I didn't do it every couple of days, we could not touch one another without sparks flying.

Wow! That's the first time I've ever seen hummingbirds in the snow--and probably the first time they've been in snow in their lives!! I'm shocked at how long this cold snap is lasting for you, Beth. Here it's up to 37 and rain...probably more of what you're used to!
Hummingbirds in the snow -- rare indeed! Poor Solomon, freezing his tummy. Love seeing the divots he made in the snow. Definitely time to be indoors!

Padma is gorgeous! We have short-haired kitties, so they don't seem to get static like Padma is. I'm sure they'll all be happy the snow is gone. We're above freezing today, so things will be melting before too long.
Oh my goodness, those hummers in the snow are awesome! I'd never thought hummingbirds and snow would be together either.
Love all the other birds as well. My Dottie Dog says that she knows all about fur full of static!
I think that's an oxymoron--hummers and snow! But your pictures are the proof it happens! Those are some cold temps! We have been missed by most of this weather going by, except for cold. Which is fine! I never considered static cling hurting animals with fur! Hmmm... Stay warm! Hugs!
