Ode to some of the smaller birds. 

It's hard to visually distinguish between a male House Finch and Purple Finch.

Their songs are very different, but this guy was not singing.

He's very bright and color saturated, so I think he's a Purple Finch.

We can enjoy either way.

The Chestnut-backed Chickadees are done breeding. 

They're showing up at the feeders once again.

They spend more time at the feeder than the Black-capped do.

Good to see you again.

And here's a Black-capped Chickadee.

I had a male Rufous stop by briefly on the evening of 7/13.

I think he was just passing through on his way migrating south once again.

Female Anna's

Female Rufous - they'll stick around through the end of August.

I love the quality of light for this series of photos.

They are all of a female Rufous.

The throat pattern is stunning.

Two Special Woodpeckers

Good birding Wednesday morning.

I can't tell you the last time I've seen a Red-breasted Sapsucker.

This is a young, newly-fledged bird.

How do I know?  

The red head is dull in color - a mature bird has a bright. bright red head.

I'm just glad that there were birds nesting successfully nearby.

And Special Bird #2!

A male Pileated Woodpecker.

It worked out so my mom was able to see him.

I changed GAST "Mulberry" to "Cranberry" as I found the original color far too orange/brown for my tastes. 

Single bird feature today.

It's a Red-breasted Nuthatch.

It's unusual for one to stay still.

This is perhaps my favorite of this series.

I think they look inquisitive.

I'm glad to have them around.
