Sunday was a Red Letter Day.
I got to see two Pileated Woodpeckers.
A male in the early morning, and a female later in the day.

The male hung out in two different snags.

The first was atop a dead old growth Douglas fir.

Then it flew in closer and lit on the dead top of a Big Leaf Maple.

There's many reasons to keep dead trees and snags if possible.

They are the perch of choice for woodpeckers of all sizes as well as many different raptors.

The male Pileated has red atop its head from the very back all the way forward to the bill.

It also has a bright red mustache.

Pretty easy to see both here.

And here's the female.

She also flew in on the Big Leaf Maple snag.

I got some good looks at her as did my Dad.

Note that the red on her head ends high on her forehead well before her eyes.

And no red mustache.
What a great woodpecker day!
A male and female - maybe a potential nesting pair.
Wouldn't that be cool?
