Still Around

Design - "Spring Violets"
Designer - Hands to Work
Fabric - 40 count R & R Inkspot Black
Fibers - ???
Started - 1 January 2007
Completed - 15 February 2009

The 40 count R & R Inkspot Black linen proved to be very challenging.  The dark fabric, combined with the small count, was tough on my then 50+ year old eyes. And now my eyes are even older - probably could not stitch this.

A couple of the Winter Regulars are still around.

A Bewick's Wren

I've also heard a Pacific Wren singing a couple of mornings, but have not seen it.

Bewick's are reasonably 'tame' in terms to feeder actvitiy.

I hope they nest nearby.

Not showing up at the suet feeders any long, but still here, a Ruby-crowned Kinglet.

This shy guy will move up into the Cascade Mountains of Oregon and Washington and most of Canada to breed.

Springing Forward

Design - "Joyful Journal - March"
Designer - Heart in Hand
Fabric - 30 count WDW Confederate Gray
Fibers - GAST & WDW - 2 strands over 2 threads
Started - 7 March 2017
Completed - 30 March 2017

Interesting bird things are happening.

An unusual color variation for a male House Finch.

Their pigment is partially based on what they eat.

Rather than pinky/red, this guy's head is bright yellow.

Hey it's a Red-breasted Nuthatch!

I've got two pair of Violet-green Swallows!

Hoping for further pairs to follow.

House hunting has begun.

Another Woodpecker

Chart - "A Year of Flowers"
Design - "March"
Designer - The Drawn Thread"
Fabric - 30 count R & R Irish Creme linen
Fibers - DMC - 2 strands over 2 threads
Started - 25 March 2014
Completed - 25 March 2014
Spring is here!

And here's another woodpecker.

This time it's a female Red-shafted Northern Flicker.

I usually just refer to them as Flickers.

That said, most of the country has Yellow-shafted Northern Flicker which look quite different.

Every once in a while we have a hybrid which combines the characteristics of the two sub-species.

Anyway, she's lovely.

Look Who Has Returned

Design - "Awakening" (freebie)
Designer - The Primitive Hare
Fabric - 28 count mystery fabric
Floss - WDW & DMC - 2 strands over 2 threads
Started - 7 March 2014
Completed - 8 March 2014

Look who has returned!

A female Acorn Woodpecker.

The small group of birds I see spring through early fall mostly disappears from November thru February.

So it's good to have her back.

She showed up briefly both Saturday and Sunday.

I'm hoping the males will also swing by in the near future.

Sunday's Hummers

So I have a mix of birds this week.

As discussed earlier, a male Rufous came by.

Here's a female Anna's

She has a feather sticking out on breast.

And to compare...

Saturday evening I saw my first of season FEMALE Rufous Hummingbird.

Note the brown on her breast.

This compares to the Anna's female...

who has a greeny/white breast.
The birds are back in force!
