A Backyard Bobcat

And the Animal Adventure continued on May 31st.

About 30 minutes after the bear cub left, this handsome bobcat arrived.

I was outside reading when something made me look up and there it was!  

It saw me too, but as I did not move, it appeared unafriad.

Gotta love the bobbed tail and pointy ear-tips! 

And the mix of solid and polka-dot patterned fur.

I was able to take a couple dozen photos.

What a striking animal.

Healthy coat and muscular body.

 

Then it headed off.

Places to go.

And things to do!

A Backyard Bear

So this young bear cub seems to have split off from his/her sibling and Mama Bear.

The bottom of the plastic dome is at about 5' to give you an idea of the size of the cub.

The cub learned how to take the rope tie off from the hook and lower the dome and the feeder beneath it. 

You can see his frustration that there is no longer a feeder as I removed it.

Here he was a couple of weeks ago with a successful lower and grab.

I'd hope that removing the feeder, would encourage him to wander elsewhere.

 

But on May 31st he came to the back yard about 12:30pm and tore down a suet feeder.

It was filled with a hot pepper suet cake - thus the tongue out reaction.

Though he still ate a goodly portion of the suet cake.

So now there is nothing at the edge of the yard, and the birdfeeders are, I hope, protected by a motion-detector that strays water for 30 seconds.  I want this cub to stay wild and not to become acclimated to humans.

A sweet little bee skep!

I happened upon a couple of Lesser Goldfinch fledglings.

Like most fledglings, they were fat and fluffy.

And while fully capable of feeding themselves, they preferred to beg from their father.

Kid on the left, Dad on the right.

Alright!  If you insist!

Earlier this week I was pleased to see the first of the season Willow Flycatcher.  

Year after year, this is a bird I see down at the Big Creek, but not up near the house.

I expect it to relocate closer to water...and willows!

It was here for one evening and the next morning.

It sallied from several different small branches chasing after insects.

It also continually twitched its tail.

It looks nice against a blue sky.

Welcome back!

Contrasting greens.

Green ripening into brown.

Waving green.
