Three Yellow Birds and One Bluebird

Wednesday was an April Shower Day, so I was able to stitch a bit.
Got the two yellow chicks stitched up on this L*K piece.

And speaking of birds...

Look who showed up Tuesday afternoon!

Mr. Bluebird!  Hey buddy, I have a bluebird house all set up ready for you.  No deposit, no monthly payments, no closing fees.  It's ready for occupants.

Also on Tuesday, this male Lesser Goldfinch hung around most of the afternoon.

See him singing his heart out?

I don't like the name Lesser Goldfinch as I don't think there is anything diminishing about such a pretty little bird.

He is smaller and more slender than the 'regular' Goldfinches.

I hope he sticks around...

...and finds a lady friend.

Gifts of all Kinds

In early March Maggee over at Stitching Devotee had a give-away.

It was for this cute little hand made snow angel bead.
I won!  And I am so pleased.

Now here's where the 'small world' factor comes into play.
The snow angel was made by Melanie of the fabulous Moonraker BeadsMelanie has a blog - Moonraker Lampwerks.  She offered to give away the three part Lizzie Kate Halloween Mystery Sampler.

And I won that as well!  Wow - I am continually amazed at the generousity of the cross stitch blogging community.  Thank you so much Maggee and Melanie.

The rain is to return tomorrow.  Today's sunny dry day is a gift as well.  Let's take advantage of it and go for a walk.

It's April and everything is in bud.

This is an evergreen blackberry - I love the color of the old leaves.

The first sign of Common Horsetails (Equisetum arvense).

This is some kind of Forget-me-not relative and will bloom within the month.

Another horsetail!  These are Scouring Rush Horsetails (Equisetum hyemale).  It does not produce flowers or seeds, but has spores and rhizomes instead.
I think this might be a Lady Fern (Athyrium filix-femina).  It was growing along side a rivulet.

Near the house we have a wild Lamb's Tongue (or Trout Lily) growing.  It is a large specimen, but as you can see, the deer have already nipped at it.  So we've protected it with a cage.  I think the bloom stalk may have multiple blossoms - we shall see.

And oh, the many pretty shades of green as the deciduous trees and shrubs erupt with new foliage.

I'm still loving my Grand Hound's Tongue.

Amazingly the wild Iris (Iris tenax) have begun to bloom.  I can't remember a time that they were this early.

With four days (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday) of unseasonably warm weather, the blossoms of the Big Leaf Maples have dropped and opened.  That is wonderful news for many pollinators including bees and hummingbirds.  Many other birds and animals also feed on the blooms including the Evening Grosbeaks.

Well that concludes our Early April Walk.  I hope you enjoyed seeing the first big wave of Spring's verdant rebirth.

Bloglovin' Demands That I Do This!

I'm no techie so I hope this works!

Gardening Overtakes Stitching

Another delightful border.  This is "March's Daffodil" from a Cottage Garden Sampling.  I like all the shamrock motifs and the vine-wrapped birdhouse. I've spent more time gardening than stitching as of late...

As part of the Tuesday Garden Party at an Oregon Cottage, I'll tell you why.

First off the Eugene Garden Club held a plant sale as a fundraiser.
As you can see from the sign above, it is an old and honored club.
Dodecatheon herdersonii -Shooting Stars
There were several different vendors, but I was most taken with the items Doak's Creek Native Plant Nursery brought to the sale.

Fritillaria affinis - Checker Lily

Trillium ovatum

Erythronium oregonium - Giant Fawn Lily (Lamb's Tongue)

Lilium columbianum - Tiger Lily

I brought home a sampling of some of the native plants.

I also brought home some sedums.

Here's my April Surprise!
I looked in my little lean-to greenhouse and discovered that not only had this auricula successfully over-wintered, it was blooming its little heart out!

I've put a cage around my Trillium 'Volcano' so the deer don't munch it.
Isn't the color stunning?

With sunshine and temperatures of 72F this past weekend, I had to be outside! I've set out all the agaves as well as the agastaches and salvias.  I think I will end up with an over 90% retention rate.  I was lazy this winter and did not cover up plants or move them into the garage when the temperatures dipped below 25F, but everything seems to have survived.

Next up set out the begonias and the fuchsias before the rain returns on Thursday.  Happy Gardening!

Blue Violet Reflections

I attempted to get in one more Easter stitch.
This is "A Little Easter" by Lizzie Kate.
But I did not make much progress...

It was 72F on Saturday and again on Easter Sunday.
Padma and I spent hours and hours outside gardening.  I even managed to get a light sunburn on the back of my neck.  I'm a true Oregonian - the first sign of the sun, and I burn!

For many years now, in the early spring, a vacant lot in town becomes a thing of beauty.

Muscari in a wonderful violet-blue.

Over the years they've naturalized with wild abandon.

It is a pretty dense planting now.

And makes for a sea of blue!
The vignette lasts only a couple of weeks.
Perhaps because it is fleeting, I think it is lovely, lovely, lovely!
