An adult male Hairy Woodpecker.

Gobbling food.

At a big tree.

And here's his young one!

Note the red on the head is on the TOP of the head, not on the BACK of the head.

Young males and females BOTH have this red spot.

The singing continues!

Dark-eyed Junco (Oregon subspecies)

A Bewick's Wren

Singing and singing

And Singing and Singing!

A male Black-headed Grosbeak

Also singing up a storm.

I've had a lot of fun this spring using Cornell University's birding app - Merlin.
The app is free and assists in IDing birds by sight, with photos, and with sound.
I've been using the sound to help me ID birds and figure out my Dawn Chorus:
Black-throated Gray Warblers, Black-headed Grosbeaks, Robins, Black-capped Chickadees, Steller's Jays, and Western Tanagers.  The sound ID can easily misidentify, so use good judgement before deciding you have a "Rare Bird".  It has helped me tremendously in recognizing some of my summer common singers, and some more obscure birds like a Cassin's Vireo. I encourage you to give it a try.

A sweet little bee skep!

I happened upon a couple of Lesser Goldfinch fledglings.

Like most fledglings, they were fat and fluffy.

And while fully capable of feeding themselves, they preferred to beg from their father.

Kid on the left, Dad on the right.

Alright!  If you insist!

A sweet little bee skep!

Time to head over to an Oregon Cottage for the Tuesday Garden Party.

What do Gardeners do when they aren't gardening?
They look at garden catalogues, read garden books, buy garden plants...

...and they take great delight in visit other gardens!
On Saturday and Sunday I visited six area gardens.  There were large gardens and small gardens, city gardens and country gardens.  But one thing they all seemed to have was a individual sense of style.  Each was singular in its own way - unique to the people who tend and love it.
One garden was awash in glass ornaments...

..and bunnies.

Another garden used rusted art as its particular style.

Further bunnies!

I think this was my favorite whimsical element of all.  The little stream is only about 8" wide - the fish ornament no more than 5'' tall - so charming!

Close by, Frodo Frog watched.

A Garden Spirit?

This is a Hobbit House!  Click on the photo to see the wonderful frog door-pull.

The garden also had a lovely Labyrinth.  Such a thoughtful and restful place to visit.

I have more garden photos to share - I'll do so on Thursday's post.
