If you look at October's header, you'll notice that I stitched three owl mittens. There is yet one more that I did not get to last year, so it is first up on my rotation.
I'm not sure what the woodpeckers think of owls. I know they don't much care for hawks, so they probably aren't terribly fond of owl either.
I reasonably convinced that this is a woodpecker feather. Not sure which kind though.
Suddenly I am not seeing my Hairy Woodpeckers as frequently as I did in early September.
Most often now, it is just a single bird.
And the bird is not coming by until late in the afternoon.
I've noticed that the Acorn Woodpeckers are getting aggressive and running off the Hairy Woodpeckers...
...and they are also harassing my Red-breasted Sapsuckers.
Both birds are much smaller than the Acorns, so they leave rather than fight back.
I love the bright red heads...
...and in the winter, the Anna's Hummingbirds drink from Sapsucker wells.
So far this fall, they've not come to my feeders.
And here's my rascally Acorn Woodpecker family.
Dad on the left, Junior in the middle (with blue eyes), and Mom on the right.
Clown Birds!
I counted four of them - I think 3 guys and 1 gal.
Given that ratio, most of my photos are of the guys.
The red on the head is just plain RED!
There's a woodpecker tongue at work...
...and success! Snagged a peanut.
The Flickers have been pretty reliable.
And their demographics are opposite of the Acorns'.
I've counted 3 gals and 1 guy.
Here's an adult male.
And this, I think is a juvenile male with the pale mustache.
How great that you will have stitched the whole mitten set.
ReplyDeleteThat is so interesting about the Acorn Woodpecker family's eyes.
I love those Cricket owl mitten designs!! They are so cute. I'm eager to see you stitch this one. Great bird photos as always.
ReplyDeleteHappy week end and happy stitch
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, that pic of the acorn woodpeckers sitting all in a row is hilarious! It looks staged! :D Love your new header -- love owls.
ReplyDeletebeautiful thread color, love the bird photos
ReplyDeleteBecause of your blog I was able to answer a question while watching Jeopardy the other night. The clue was a picture of a bird and I knew right away it was a Steller's Jay from your posts and pictures.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful feast for the eyes Beth! Can't get enough of the woodpeckers!
ReplyDeleteThat's going to be a nicely colored Owl piece... look forward to seeing it finished! I have never seen a Hairy yet... in fact, it is easier just to say I have only seen Downy's and Red-bellied's! Ah well... that can change eventually! Hugs!
