A Wednesday Wildflower Walk

This little stitch is almost done.  I think though, that I'm going to frog out some of the 'Whiskey' used in the trumpet of the daffodil as the color is too brown for my taste...one of the downsides of variegated flosses!

The rain has areturned - grab an umbrella and we will take
A Wildflower Walk

We'll start about a mile from my driveway and see what we can find along the way.

First up - this sweet little flower is one of the earliest to bloom.

The honey bee is most pleased!
We've always called it Spring Beauty, I don't know the botanical name for it.

The shoots of the Camas are coming up strong and true.
They like wet soil.

This neighbor has let her front year 'go wild' with great results.  She has hundreds - maybe thousands of naturalized Fawn Lilies.   Her son has stern instructions not to mow until after the 4th of July when plants are spent and have gone to seed.  I love their mottled leaves.  They'll be in bloom in a week or so.  And so will her Shooting Stars.  I'll be back for more photos.

High on the shaded banks along the roadside - Trilliums!
The Western Trillium (Trillium Ovatum) to be exact.

They are most happy as an under-canopy plant - growing beneath dense Douglas Fir trees amongst the ferns.

So pretty - I think we have an especially good showing this year.

And these are Small Flowered Trilliums (Trillium parviflorum).  Their mottled leaves set them apart from Western Trilliums.

Almost home now and the first of the wild Iris is in bloom.
Soon our sunny meadow will be awash in mauve, and lavender, and violet bunches of blooms.

I think you can appreciate the mundane too.
The English Daisy or Lawn Daisy (Bellis Perennis

I found a patch of Stream Violets (Viola Glabella).

As their name suggests they grow along stream banks, or in my case, in moist forests.

I hope you enjoyed today's walk - it was good to get outside!

PS - Padma got his stitches taken out on Monday - but he has to wear his 'Super Cape' for a couple more days.

  3. I think we all agree on the floss colour, variegated threads do have their downside. Lovely natural flowers today - the irises are such a pretty colour.

  7. Love those trilliums. Down south here they love to root under the wild dogwood trees. Makes for a beautiful spring picture!
