I'm not done with Snow Guys quite yet!

I took a poll, and Padma said, "No Thanks" to a walk today.

And every time I thought about going outside it was either raining...

...or hailing...
So I've postponed The Walk until tomorrow.

I did want to take a moment to encourage folks in the U.S. and Canada to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  The site has an instructional video, list of FAQ, and other helpful information.

Believe me you don't have to be an expert to have fun and contribute some numbers to the count.  If you have a bird-feeder, or bird bath, or trees and other vegetation that attracts birds, you are ready to begin.

It's pretty easy - you input your zip code and then can print out a list of 'likely birds in your area".  If I remember there are some questions about whether you are urban or rural, if you have any snow on the ground, and how you'd rate yourself as a 'birder' - Amateur!

I found that it worked best to 'observe' around meal-times for the best results.  Early morning, mid-day, and early evening were the times I had the most activity at the feeders and baths and other 'birdish' habitats.

There are several really good websites to help with identification including  All About Birds and Audubon.  My sister and I worked as a team and had a good time (we are competitive!) - each trying to 'see more' than the other.

After you turn in your reports, you can view the tallies submitted by others in your area. Last year, we were the only ones in Eugene, Oregon who sighted a Turkey Vulture.

Solomon is resting up for the GBBC weekend!  Stay tuned!

  5. I am gearing up for the GBBC! Need to get some bird seed to put in place, just in case the birds forgot where I live! I know, it is late to be doing that... but... they have not had a hard winter here! Love the snowman, of course! Hugs!

  7. Your snowman is a cutie. Cats have an amazing capacity for sleep. We had the bird count weekend at the end of January.
