Chill Out - Find Your Zone

Design - "Chill Out" (kit)
Designer - Heart in Hand
Fabric - 32 count Dirty Belfast linen
Fibers - WDW & GAST - 2 strands over 2 threads
Started - 19 January 2012
Completed - 25 January 2012

I thought about stitching some buttons on the snow guy, then decided I liked the simple, uncluttered look.

The Big Gardening News today is the publication of a new U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zone Map for the United States and Puerto Rico.

You can click: http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/ and get to the website to find out more information about your location.  There's a box to input your zip code to get your zone.  For example, I live in zone 8b with average extreme low temperatures of 15-20F.  You can also click on any state on the map and get a more detailed look at your state.  Note that mapping was done by our very own Oregon State University in Corvallis, OR.  Very cool!

  1. Your stitch is adorable! Have to ask because I don't garden - did the map change much?

  4. The snowman is adorable. I appreciate the new map. I live in western Washington and LOVE gardening here. After living in places with very hot summers, I felt like I died and went to gardening heaven when we moved here!

  6. What a cute snow guy! I was listening to a local show yesterday and the gardening guy was talking about the new zones. It was interesting. My area got changed slightly but the gardening guy said while we have been warmer lately he still thinks we should stick with the old guidelines. Probaby can't err on the side of being careful and plants around here tolerate heat better than freezing cold.

  7. I think our map numbers are right on target. 8a... I love your snowman. Which thread is used for the snowman's body? I sure like the looks of it! Perfect! Hugs!

  8. Isn't he cute :)

And I read about the zone changes--we changed zones here in Pittsburgh from 5 to 6. Not that that will help my gardening ability at all :)

  9. Congrats on the finish! I think with that hat he's a snowboarder-snowman. =)

Looks like we're in zone 8a, but the line from 7b to 8a cuts through the middle of the city. So who knows for sure!
