We've had some 'interesting' weather to start off the new year. Several very cold nights /early mornings (for us) with a low of 18°F Saturday morning. On Sunday we greeted the day with a skiff of snow followed by sleet and freezing rain. A pretty miserable day. Nonetheless, the inclement weather made for busy feeders as everyone took advantage of 'easy' food sources to battle the cold temperatures.
The Steller's Jays swarm to the feeders in bad weather.
I have a soft heart and set out 'extra' peanuts and other protein rich food.
I'm sure they's say thank you if they had better manners.
It's important not to neglect the ground feeders like the Mourning Doves.
...and the California Quail.
When the weather gets cold...
...the birds get puffy!
It was lovely to hear a Song Sparrow singing away on a cold winter's morning.
Further proof that every day truly is a gift.
The poor little Pine Siskin did not look nearly as pleased with the weather.
After several week's hiatus, I now have a flock of 6-8 House Finches.
There are several males. Most are red or orange hued.
But this fellow is yellow!
Speaking of yellow - what a great surprise to have a male Lesser Goldfinch stop by.
He visited for just a day, but that was a pleasant winter gift.
And another nice surprise - a skein of Canada Geese flew overhead.
Beautiful birds xx
