And Owl and Further Woodpeckers

Normally January would find me stitching snowmen, but instead I'm stitching a  Snowy Owl! That's what I'm calling this Prairie Schooler owl anyway.

I decided I'd feature my Woodpeckers this week as I have lots of decent photos to share.

This is one of my favorites.  A female Northern Red-shafted Flicker in a new Acer that we've purchased as have yet o plant.  Love the green-yellow of the branches.

Her she is (or one of her female friends) at the suet feeder.

Puffed up on an especially cold day.

The red mustache is an indication that this is a male Flicker.

The female waits her turn...

...but the male isn't going anywhere soon.

This female Hairy Woodpecker is also a frequent visitor.

She prefers the feeders in the backyard where she does not have to compete with the larger Flickers and Acorns.

She's the reason I've set out a peanut feeder there, though the Chestnut-backed Chickadees also frequent it.

Once in a while she comes around to the front of the house.

If the coast is clear...

...she will snack at the suet feeder too.

  1. These flickers are such beautiful birds. And why not stitch a snowy owl instead or a snowman? :))

  5. Beth, I can never see enough pictures of flickers. Their markings are incredible - polka dots are apparently good luck for the new year so they are all set! The hairy woodpeckers are so cute as well.

  7. What a cute little owl design. We have been getting lots of visits by the flickers. They are beautiful when they fly.

  8. We apparently have yellow-shafted Flickers, tho I have not been that close to see the yellow. Maybe this year! I think I have about three females and one male Downy visiting. And I have yet to read up on Red-bellieds, but two different sized ones visit my feeder...might be a couple... Great pictures as always! I always click on them, because you have captured such great details! Hugs!
