I had my first sighting of a Rufous Hummingbird on March 1st.
It took me until Saturday to be able to snap a photo or two.
The male Rufous was atop a small fir tree in the backyard.
As it was a dark rainy afternoon, the photos are not great.
I know it is a male as like the Anna's, he has a colorful throat.
This was the best shot I got with the bright orange throat and the tail feathers spread wide. The Rufous Hummingbirds are still shy and will not allow me to approach them without darting away.
The Anna's are another story! I can sit in a chair on the patio next to this feeder, and they will come and drink and pretty much ignore me.
Though they remain on the lookout for other hummers!
The female Anna closely resembles a female Rufous.
But where the Anna's breast is white and green, the Rufous has a white and brown breast.
Ah, the Rufous is so pretty! Love the little Anas too. Three was this fantastic pic on instagram today. Someone had saved a hummer (I think an Ana) from danger and it was sitting in his hand right before it took off and away. So cool!
ReplyDeleteI think the Rufous is so pretty but our little Anna's are such dependable feeders.
ReplyDeleteWow, you have some fabulous shots of both of these hummingbirds. I love the Anna's hummingbirds and you're right, they don't care if you are there or not. I had a Rufous hummingbird here in November but the Anna's hummers chased him off. I hope to see it again. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteNot bad for the first sighting!
