Speaking of birds...
Winter is a good time to attract woodpeckers to your feeders.

Here a Flicker works away at suet, while the small Downy pecks at a seed cylinder.

I keep hoping to have more than one Downy at the feeders.  They are small birds, but maybe they are territorial.

The Flickers are communal birds and I often have two or three in the smal general area.

The most communal of the woodpeckers are my Acorn Woodpeckers.

I've had three or four at the feeders and two more hanging out nearby.

Right now they are a bit displeased with me. The top of my old large peanut feeder did not fit snugly and the birds could reach inside and easily snag a peanut or two.  I bought a new feeder and also plastic domes in an attempt to keep the peanuts dry and fresh. The birds miss their 'easy pickings' and they do not like the domes.  They have to navigate more carefully to land on the feeders and not bonk into the domes. I finally gave in and took the dome off the smaller feeder, and I raised the dome up on the larger using an empty aluminium can.

I am hoping in a couple of weeks that they'll get used to the new set up. The last thing I want to do is expose them to diseased food.  The peanuts were getting wet and moldy exposed to the rain.  And peanuts are not cheap as anyone who buys peanut butter well knows.

Can we still be friends?

I hope so!

There's always suet available too guys!

  7. That is one of my favorite bird designs, Beth--it looks great framed. I've finished it twice as a little ornament, but have given them both away. Need to make sure I keep the next one :)

  9. I hope the woodpeckers settle for the new system and that it works for everyone. Peanuts are expensive indeed. Those acorn woodpeckers are so pretty. Love your framed piece!

  11. Love the bird finish. Also love all the photos of the woodpeckers. We seem to be down to downys only right now. I've heard the Red-bellied in the woods but haven't heard the Pileated in weeks.
