Early June Stitching and Growing and Blooming

Here's an update on Just Nan's "Bluebird Sampler".  The letters in the alphabet use GAST Baby Spinach and Dried Thyme creating a soft, muted look.

It's Wednesday, time to take another walk...
Someone asked on my past Saturday Walk Post, if all the trees were on my property - most are - the Hawthorn was on the edge of the property line, the Hemlock down two driveways...FYI I also corrected the name of the Pine to Ponderosa Pine.
On this walk I roam farther afield...down along the road about 1/2 a mile and back again.

This is called the Large Leaved Avens (Geum macrophyllum).  It is an Oregon native and likes shade and moisture.  This was growing along a shaded ditch by the side of the road.

Also growing in the shade, on a bank by the road, was this example of Large False Solomon's Seal (Maianthemum racemosum).

Western Meadowrue (Thalictrum occidentale) grows happily in the dappled shade of the forest.

This Ocean Spray (Holodiscus discolor) is growing right by the house - in a rocky open place.  I don't think I'd ever noticed it before though we've lived here five years now.

Fragrant Fringecup (Tellima grandiflora)
The Fragrant Fringecup grows everywhere around here - along side the road, by the creeks, along our paths.  I always thought it was a Heuchera - it's not!  So live and learn!

And I am pleased to finally (after decades of seeing it) identify the Northern Inside-out Flower (Vancouveria hexandra). It grows in the deep shade of coniferous forests.
I hope you have time this week to take a walk outside.  Someone asked if I had ever taught...no...but my degree was in History with a minor in English, so maybe I do have a bit of teacher in me!

  1. Thanks for the walk! You should consider teaching a horticulture class on plant identification...you would be good at it!
