Look at that - another finish!  I'm on a roll this month.

When woodpeckers are scared, they 'freeze' at the feeder.  They hold still for several minutes at a time if they perceive there is danger.

The small Downy Woodpecker is particularly vulnerable to predation.

I've also seen the larger Hairy Woodpecker 'freeze'.

This cylinder of food is almost gone now. They've been hungry birds this month.

Hey!  It's a Red-breasted Sapsucker!

And better than average photos this time.

This was a thrill!  TWO Red-breasted Sapsuckers.

Here's a male Acorn Woodpecker.

And here's a young male (blue eyes) and an adult male (pink eyes).

So how many Acorn Woodpeckers are there?
I'm not sure.  I've never seen more than three at a time, but as I've seen two females and two males...hmmm...four birds total?

No one will tell me.

I must keep watching...

Hey you two!

If it were easy to walk over to your granary tree I'd hang out there for a bit to see what's going on.

I think you are making this a challenge!

Well, I'm up for it.

This female Flicker posed for me.

She seemed to have a bit rather bedraggled tail feathers.

What do you think?

I'll end with a male Flicker...and keep waiting for a Pileated to come by.

  5. I just love Be Scary! what great colors. I am so impressed with all the different woodpeckers. I generally only get flickers, hairy, and on a few very lucky occasions the pileated.
