Seeing wild violets is always a gift. On Wednesday a couple of gifts flew in!

Two Pileated Woodpeckers dropped by for an extended visit.

I'd heard the birds, and then watched them fly overhead to this tree.

This is the male. Red atop his head from the back all the way forward to his bill. He also has a bright red mustache.

This is the female.  Her red head stops before reaching her eyes, and no red mustache.

The two birds chatted (loudly) to each other.
And then flew off to a tree in the front of the house.

I followed to watch...They share this tree for a while before the female flew off to another tree close by.

They male stayed put.

Here he is with this red crown looking tidy.

A moment later the crown feathers are ruffled and standing on end.

Hard to believe that it is the same bird as above.

My male Acorn Woodpecker flew in to see what was going on.  This is a great photo to compare the size of the two woodpeckers.

I'd not seen or heard a Pileated Woodpecker for several weeks, so it was a special treat to have a pair fly in.  Spring is in the air - we can hope that there will be baby Pileated Woodpeckers this summer.
