Suddenly Lots of Hummers

I've been worried most of April and May that I did not have nearly the number of hummingbirds that I've had in past years.

Well, suddenly in the first week or so of June I have lots of Rufous Hummingbirds.

I know I have at least two male Rufous.

And there are at least three female Rufous.

This gal (or immature male) has a bit of red on the throat.

I think I also have two male Anna's and a couple female Anna's.

The Rufous have taken over the backyard as 'theirs'.

The gals perch on the cages which protect some of my large pots from the deer.

It allows them to oversee their territory...

...which includes many of my potted plants like this salvia...

...and this agastache.

Yummy!

I do also see Anna's in the backyard.

They are longer and larger than the Rufous.

The Rufous are more feisty.

The Anna's do use the feeders in the front of the house.

And so do the Rufous.

A rather blurry photo of a male Rufous.

Hmmm, says this Anna's - looking thoughtful.

Remember the Rufous are here just for the summer, and I am here all year long!

  1. Glad they are back now! I've been concerned about not seeing any Ruby throateds here in my NE Florida home, but saw one on my coral honeysuckle an hour ago. There was a nightmarish sighting at my work involving a crow. I had to bury a poor little bird...ugh; I'm forever traumatized. It's nice to see so many varieties in your area. Thanks for sharing.

  3. As usual, your photos are just wonderful. We sat on our deck and watched two of them fight over our feeder. Boy, they don't like to share!!!!!

  4. I keep wondering how you get such beautiful close ups of your birds and especially these hummers. Around my daughter's feeders, they are quite fleeting. Marvelous to see all of yours.

  5. Hooray for hummers! They will always be my sentimental favorites. I still remember the first time I ever saw a hummingbird in my grandmother's garden. Such wonderful little birds.
