The Cats of Clos du Bois weighed in recently and this is the Valentine stitch they chose. I do admire their flair for color - as avocado green, deep purple, and lilac are unusual Valentine colors.
Thursday there was very little activity at my bird feeders. I'm not sure why - perhaps the hawks were hanging about most of the day. I got rather discouraged, as every time I passed by there was no on around.
Until...
About 3:30pm my Varied Thrush showed up at the suet feeder.
According to the website All About Birds, the Varied Thrush resides in the conifer forests of the Pacific Northwest. In the summer it eats insects, in the winter it switches to berries and seeds.
The coloring and markings are similar to that of the Meadowlark, but much brighter. I had a Varied Thrush show up last year - but not at the feeder. It hung out in the front yard with the Robins. I later found out that the only time Varied Thrushes flock with other species is when they occasionally forage for earthworms on lawns with American Robins.
The female is a brown-gray, while the male is black and bright orange. So I'm thinking this is a female. She certainly made my day!
Sweet little Valentine stitching :)
