Saturday's Critters

Here we go!

Barry's antlers are growing!

Last Sunday morning we had a bear stroll through the backyard.

I was outside watching birds and the deer in the backyard.

They went on high alert so I knew something was worth paying attention to.

This is about a 3/4 sized bear.

For all that it is extremely well-fed and has a lot of heft to it.

It moved on to the front of the house and then down the driveway.

Woodpeckers Part Two

Design - "March Blows"
Designer - Bent Creek
Fabric - 28 count Country French Cafe Mocha linen
Floss - WDW and GAST
Started - 10 July 2010
Completed - 11 July 2010

So these photos are all about Flickers.

A female contentedly eating suet.

No she's perched on a tree branch.

Her orange tail feathers are prominently.  Why it's called a Red-shafted Flicker I do not understand.
This is orange, NOT red!

And now a male flies in and fans out his tail feathers.

"Look at me!", he says.

I'm not sure she's impressed.

He is handsome though.

A male Downy Woodpecker

And here's another one.

Adorable

All ruffled up!

Neat and tidy once again.

And for size comparison, here's a male Hairy Woodpecker.

Lots of tongue action.

A bill that means business.

And a male Acorn Woodpecker came by again.

Where are the other members of your group buddy?

A lovely bird.

Keep popping in please.

Wednesday's Walk

Most walks this time of year also include a bird or two.

In this case it was two Hutton's Vireos!

They were chatting up a storm which made it easier to locate them in the brush.

Still some flower activity.
Violet

Trillium

Violets

Ninebark

Up close

And before the heat causes them to fade away...

Lots and lots of Iris tenax.

Drifts

Single blossom

Trio

Cascading down the hill

What a joy!

An adorable White Pelican, yes?

On Saturday look what flew overhead!

More accurately what soared and glided and floated for ten minutes or more.

A group of 14 White Pelican that's what!

I regularly see a small group during migration.

Saturday was my lucky day!

Look at the 2nd bird!  He looks like he's standing / free-falling.
I think that's how I'd probably fly if I could.

Anyway it was great to see this group of beautiful graceful fliers.

I hope to see them again next year.
