Sunday's Hummer

I'd hoped to be able to feature a female Anna's.  I briefly saw one twice earlier in the week, but did not have a camera either time.

So here's the guy.

He's a tough little dude.

I saw him run off a Steller's Jay!

Some Unusual Visitors

Last week a couple of Mallards came by on a rainy afternoon.

That's pretty unusual for here.

I also had three Purple Martins two evenings in a row.

They are generally August visitors.

Unusual to see BOTH Ravens.

Still House-hunting though I'm seeing the swallows with bits of dried grass too.

They seem taken with this nesting box.

Here's hoping.

This bird is my nemesis.
She come by each morning and spends up to 90 minutes harassing the the jays and keeping any small birds from coming to the feeders.

Wednesday's Walk

It's a lovely day to take a walk!

Oregon White Oak

False Solomon's Seal (Maianthemum racemosum)

False Bugbane (Trautvetteria caroliniensi)

Inside Out Flower (Vancouveria hexandra)

Columbia Lily (Lilium columbianum)

California Corn Lily (Veratrum californicum)

Western Trumpet Honeysuckle (Lonicera ciliosa)

Indian Plum (Osoberry)

Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana)

Vine Maple (Acer circinatum)

And I'll end the walk with a close up of the bright green leaves of an Oregon White Oak.

Furnishing the House

A couple of Barn Swallows have been looking for housing.

The Violet-green Swallows are gathering up dried grass to furnish their chosen homes.

The dried grasses will form the basis of their nests, then they'll line them with feathers.

One rainy afternoon I had a new couple checking out things.

I don't think they are destined to stay here though.
